In 1920 the Paramahansa Yogananda founded the Self Realization Fellowship Retreat in the beautiful, seaside community of Encinitas. He was a world teacher who brought India's science of meditation to the West. Sri Yogananda dedicated his life to bringing spiritual understanding to people through the realization of peace and love that exists within every human being.
Since it was established, the center has attracted visitors from all over the world. Hollywood's own Greta Garbo, Mahatma Gandhi and other prominent figures in science and the arts came to receive the great teacher's wisdom. Special "How to Live" programs and classes which include daily meditation with the monastics, are still offered for those who wish to come for a period of spiritual renewal.
Located on the seventeen acre grounds are the Hermitage, where Sri Yogananda lived for many years; retreat accommodations for SRF members and friends, the cliffside meditation gardens and the living quarters for members of the monastic Self Realization Order who serve there. The temple where meditation services and public lectures are held are just two blocks north of the retreat at 939 Second Street.
